It clearly takes you step by step through the many phases of building a log cabin, whether one starts with a kit or goes into the forest and cuts down trees.
It has detailed schedules and contains tons of very helpful suggestions. So, when I saw there was a third edition for sale, I jumped on it because some of the concerns raised in the first edition seemed somewhat dated. I was disappointed to see that the newer edition was virtually identical in content to the first. I am glad to have my own copy, but if a used earlier edition is available, it's got everything you need in it. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Provides great details on what a contractor has seen and recommends based on his experiences in the field. Easy to highlight big points and gives examples of paperwork needed to be a owner contractor as well.
Nice to find a professional that encourages owners to get more involved with the their homes.

One person found this helpful. Excellent book useful insight! I found this book very helpful in research I was doing. It was clear and gave me more background for the articles I was writing. Covers the basics in enough detail systems that you can keep yourself from getting into trouble as you plan your log home. Not what I was looking for. Seems to be somewhat outdated.
Has some good information but I would try to find another resource.

I am highly confident that people who are not experienced in the building construction process and who intend to build their own log home should read this book to have an idea on what real problems they may face when they actually begin the construction of a log home. The book helps the reader to define realistic targets in owning a log home rather then reaching for dreams difficult to realize for a beginner. The book provides highly important and critical information on different steps of the process before an owner built log home is finished.
The steps begin from defining your goals, expectations, acquiring land, site planning, financing and continue with general contracting, consruction process and maintenence. The chapters are sufficiently detailed for the reader to make decisions in the building process. Tips for a Novice. How to Build a House. Bathroom Remodeling For Dummies.
