The other day I re-read that post, and decided to go looking for the book. Where Bell asks probing questions about the idea that God will eternally punish people in hell, Gulley and Mulholland passionately chronicle their journey to the conclusion that He will not.

The book begins with a faith -changing experience one of the pastors had in preparing the funeral sermon of a troubled woman who died while on the very threshold of returning to her faith. Along the way, Gulley and Mulholland come to trust their own experience of God as a supremely loving being and subordinate their understanding of scripture to that experience.
This leads them inevitably to the conclusion that not all of scripture portrays God properly. A view of scripture where all scripture is equally perfect and inerrant is discarded. Other universalist authors such as Rob Bell to a degree believe they can stay within the boundaries of an inerrant view of scripture and still hold to universalism. But ultimately I think these two pastors take the more honest approach. The love of God and the love of our neighbor are the two principles by which any other principle is to be judged, and even scripture must bow to the principle of love. I had rejected the image of a wrathful, powerful God anxious to punish the wicked in the fires of hell, but I was left with a benevolent but feeble God who had no choice but to destroy the ones he loved.

I was disappointed that the author apparently doesn't believe in the Incarnation and the Resurrection or even the divinity of Christ and declares that nobody had to pay the sin debt and God could simply have forgiven all. Christians would strongly disagree since it is Christ who makes it possible for mankind to come to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings us to Christ and keeps us in the faith.
All of scripture speaks of Christ. He is present in every book of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. He is God in the flesh. Without Him the Bible is just another book. Without Christ there is no gospel. As nearly all "Christians" who have gone from a strictly Bible based, traditionally moral belief system to the revelation of All Well Be Eventually Well, this author leaves moral, biblical roots to morph his Hope of Universal Redemption into a "God's good with all manner of lifestyles" theology.

Not a scholarly look into the idea Universal Redemption ; just a "I no longer believe inconvenient passages of the Bible anymore," statement here and there, as though that somehow ought to satisfy the reader. If Grace is True is thorough and intimate explanation of Universalism and a God that truly is about grace. For "traditional "Christians, this will challenge many of your long held beliefs, but read it.
It is mentally healthy to view other beliefs and examine your own. Gulley is in no way intimidating or dogmatic, rather his writing is filled with the grace he writes about.
This book is having a great impact on my life. I truly believe God loves each of his children and will see them home. I no longer feel burdened to pray and witness to the "unsaved". I read every word Pastor Gulley has written, over and over. One person found this helpful. This book makes the most sense if you truly have forgiveness in your heart.
I forgive because I am forgiven! These words ring true God will save everyone. I am a believer. This book can change your life if you'll let it. Read this book prayerfully. The authors use scripture to back up everything. I give this book of love 5 stars! One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.
One more step
This book brought to light things I have been pondering and questioning about for some time. It is more in alignment with my idea of an all loving Father God. Sorry I felt this book was very misleading and confusing. Yes God loves us all the same and has died and suffered for my sins and the sins of others. I believe he wants us all to come to him and become like him.
