I like him a lot. I read a lot of mysteries, and I love a good series, but it's usually not the plots that bring me back again and again, it's the characters. And that is true with Jack Irish, Again, the plot is a little convoluted I find myself not even trying to figure out what's about to happen but the interplay of characters, the well drawn underbelly of Melbourne, Australia and the rush of events keep the pages turning well into the night. This second book in the series is every bit as good as the first. Well drawn characters and all the usual noir elements: The horse racing secondary storyline reminds me a bit of Dick Francis novels, though the characters are darker.
A noir series a cut above the usual kiss-kiss, bang-bang.
If you're a fan of the Spenser books I think you'll enjoy this series. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.
Sorry, I only read about half, just couldn't seem to get into it. Feel sure others loved it, so pay no attention to what I say. One person found this helpful. I always have known from an auto accident, which left me partially deaf, that accents would cause me a minor distraction.
What I didn't realize is that it also carried over to my reading as well. I have, to day the least, enjoyed this marvelously written work. Unfortunately because of the heavily accented, albeit authentic, had taken me far longer to trad than most books. The Aussie dialect, slang and profanities sometimes takes me awhile to get through.
All in all, I can say it was well worth the time and, on my behalf, the effort. I thoroughly enjoyed the book! Great plot, good characters, well written, soft boiled hero, keeps moving and nicely paced. When reading Peter Temple stories, I prefer the Jack Irish books ahead of the others because they seem less tedious and self absorbed.
Every bit as good as the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Better in fact, as the original story lines didn't quite make it entirely into the TV production. I thought the writing was excellent, but as in a previous novel the woodworking and horse racing interrupted the flow and made it difficult to follow the plot. See all 12 reviews.
