Oil Wealth and the Poverty of Politics: Algeria Compared - Miriam R. Lowi - Google Книги
Where the book falls short is in making very explicit the link between oil and political outcomes. Two issues come to mind. First, there is a frustratingly thin use of economic data and analysis to support the political interpretations offered in the book; and second, there is no great effort to tie down the precise timing of economic events to explain their linkage to political outcomes.
Besides this being factually incorrect, we never again read about gas, and the discussion remains focused exclusively on oil. These comments may seem like nitpicking, but they play a key role in the thesis. For a book exploring the link between oil and political outcomes it matters whether the author thinks that, by , the economy was in doldrums already when, in fact, it was growing. In the end, the reader comes away with a very good story of what happened in Algeria and why. Oil Wealth and the Poverty of Politics explains why Algeria's domestic political economy unravelled from the mids, and how the regime eventually managed to regain power and hegemony.
Miriam Lowi argues the importance of leadership decisions for political outcomes, and extends the argument to explain the variation in stability in oil-exporting states following economic shocks.
What is Kobo Super Points?
Comparing Algeria with Iran, Iraq, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, she asks why some states break down and undergo regime change, while others remain stable, or manage to re-stabilise after a period of instability. In contrast with exclusively structuralist accounts of the rentier state, this book demonstrates, in a fascinating and accessible study, that political stability is a function of the way in which structure and agency combine.
