And Midge is a radio personality.
Author Arkawy is a wonderful writer who drew me into, and made me feel a part of the story. Her talent for writing a skillful mystery and entertaining story is evident, and her characters and setting were well thought about and presented is such a way as to keep you turning the pages.
And check out the back of the book for some yummy recipes! To readers who read very traditional mysteries, there is moderate cussing in this story, and for those sensitive to the subject like myself , a rape is mentioned, but not acted out or talked about descriptively. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Who doesn't love a diner by the name of Soup Opera? It is aptly named since the mystery is somewhat like a soap opera.
And since I like the Soup Opera and want to eat their and try their delicious soup I soap opera's. A soap opera has many twists and turns, as does this mystery. Just when you think you have it figured out the author throws in another little curve. Intriguing characters, memories of high school and a high school reunion, and a secret that exists with this group of classmates makes us wonder if we shouldn't examine our own old high school days.
It kept me reading, kept me smiling, and enjoying the entire book along with being surprised with the conclusion. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and trying to find my way through several twists in the storyline. A nicely fleshed out little mystery. I bought this book on the recommendation of a book group.

It was not my type of book. If I hadn't paid for it, I would not have finished reading it. Its not a bad book, just not my type. I have known her other work through the theater as a very humorous yet poignant playwright. She brings that same wit and quirkiness to her characters here in Goodship--a small town where her main character Eliza finds herself suddenly a young widow after an exciting life as a sexy Soap Opera star. Fitting that Eliza chooses to call her little restaurant Soup Opera. Well this business offers the author the opportunity to have many interesting characters come by so when something out of the ordinary starts happening in this small town, the gossip begins to fly and get exchanged there.
There is an interesting twist that I didn't see coming but now that I think about it, the clues were there. I really dislike it when a mystery writer pulls something completely out of thin air--then it doesn't really feel like you could have figured out the "whodunit". Arkawy cleverly works in the clues and throws in several dead ends to keep you interested until the end.

A good sign of a good story and well-developed characters is when I don't want the book to end. I hope there will be another Eliza Gordon mystery soon.

Personally I think it is time for Eliza to find herself a new man--she is still mourning her husband but there is a handsome police chief waiting to console her!!! I couldn't wait to read the second in the series--Dead Silent. And I enjoyed that story even more. And some interesting tension between Eliza and her sexy brother-in-law. The end no spoilers was a real nail biter. So when is the next one coming out? What mischief and danger will Eliza and Midge find themselves in this time?
Killing Time is a bustling, busy mystery filled with a great cast of characters, all of whom bring the story and town of Goodship, NY, to vibrant life. Although I did not read the first in this series, book two has enough exposition to learn that Eliza does have a history to her character, allowing insight into her motivations and actions. Dead Silent: An Eliza Gordon Mystery
While appreciating the need to set the scene and character, I think it took far too long for the murder to happen and bring tension to the story. There are moments of superfluous conversation between Midge and Eliza; but, on the other hand, there is really good use of misdirection and delicately planted suspicion to keep me guessing.
Although I wish Eliza would have been the one to figure things out, the plot wraps up nicely and such intriguing developments with Jonas will definitely have me reading the first and the rest of the series. I had the feeling that if I'd read the first book in the series I might be able to keep track of all the characters better -- as it was, I needed a scorecard to get through some of the group conversations.
The mystery is good. I really like the character Eliza and think I may read another in the series to see if I get a better handle on it. This is a great beach novel.
